Inestimable blessing, unspeakable power… An inspirational story and ways to reveal the treasures you hold within.

“There is inestimable blessing in a cheerful spirit. When the soul throws its windows wide open, letting in the sunshine, and presenting to all who see it the evidence of its gladness, it is not only happy, but it has an unspeakable power of doing good.”

– Orison Swett Marden

Dr. Orison Swett Marden knew a thing or two about spirit.

It wasn’t until age forty-four that he “switched careers to professional authorship.

It was a bold decision to which he had given careful thought, having suffered repeated business reversals and a hotel fire…

Margaret Connolly, a contemporary who worked for Marden’s publishing firm in the early 1900s, describes the incident…his narrow escape from death, and the loss of his original manuscript, which he later re-wrote and entitled Pushing to the Front. Marden’s unwavering determination to start from scratch after this devastating loss was characteristic of the man and his writings. Connolly writes:

Over five thousand pages of manuscripts – the fruit of all the spare time he had been able to snatch from nearly fifteen crowded years of business life – had gone up in smoke…
Having nothing but his nightshirt on when he escaped from the fire, he went down the street to provide himself with necessary clothing. As soon as this had been attended to, he bought a twenty-five cent notebook, and, while the ruins of the hotel were still smoking, began to rewrite from memory the manuscript of his dream book.

Overwhelmed and heartbroken, Marden picked himself up and started all over again.

With little money, but with lots of time on his hands, he decided to rewrite the manuscript. He took a train for Boston, boarded an inexpensive little room, and threw himself energetically into his work. In a short time, he finished writing not only his dream book — Pushing to the Front — but also a second book, Architects of Fate…

Pushing to the Front (1894) became the single greatest runaway classic in the history of personal development books at that time.

American presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, as well as England’s Prime Minister William Gladstone, praised the book.
People like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and J.P. Morgan cited it as inspiration…”

There’s a strong spirited man for you!

But what do you think?

How did he manage to triumph over calamity the way he did?
What would you have done, if you’d been in that fire?
Was he exceptional? Are you?

What makes Marden (and yourself) both exceptional and completely unexceptional, as far as human beings go, is the possibility to connect with something bigger within.

When Marden speaks of soul and spirit, he really means it.

He isn’t just using feel-good words.

There is a power within you that’s bigger than your circumstances.

It’s bigger than who you think you are, or have been up to this point.

It’s true, in certain situations, you may find yourself ill-prepared.

Any situation, familiar or unexpected, can swiftly turn into a disaster, if you fail to rise to the occasion:

  • if you’re unsure of yourself, just when you need to be decisive;
  • if you can’t find your voice, just when it’s crucial you speak your mind;
  • if anxiety overcomes you, just when you need to be present and strong.

But that’s all it is. Lack of preparation.

If you find you’re lacking in some way it’s because you haven’t practised embodying a particular quality — ultimately, simple presence — enough. Not because you don’t have it in you.

There is place within you where you can find hope, faith, courage, inspiration, perseverance, grace, wisdom, joy, confidence, happiness, authenticity, empowerment…the list goes on.

Life will surprise you.
People, situations will call you out.

Sometimes, it takes a hard knock for those inner treasures to be revealed.

Marden writes:

“Very few people ever rise to their greatest possibilities or ever know their entire power unless confronted by some great occasion.

We are as much amazed as others are when, in some great emergency, we out-do ourselves. Somehow the power that stands behind us in the silence, in the depths of our nature, comes to our relief, intensifies our faculties a thousandfold and enables us to do things which before we thought impossible.”

You may spontaneously transcend your limited self and experience that deeper, powerful presence in a moment of emergency.

Or you may consciously commit to the journey of realising your Self without waiting for extreme measures, hard knocks.

Now’s as good a time as any to:

  • tap into more of your potential
  • activate more of your inner resources
  • develop yourself, so that your personality allows more of your Self to express.
